Why Sete Cidades is different
Sete Cidades sits inside one of São Miguel’s great volcanic calderas. The protected landscape covers about 2,173 hectares, while the volcano forms an almost circular caldera roughly 5.3 km across and around 630 m deep. Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde are the two lakes that made the landscape famous, but they are only part of what makes the area worth exploring.
Around the two main lakes are smaller bodies of water, ridges, woodland and protected habitats. The romantic legend of the princess with blue eyes and the shepherd with green eyes belongs to the local imagination, but the geology is just as fascinating: the apparent colour of the lakes changes with light, depth, vegetation and atmospheric conditions.

The viewpoints do not all tell the same story
Vista do Rei is the easiest place to get the classic composition of the landscape almost immediately. Boca do Inferno offers a much broader perspective when visibility is good, with several lakes and the caldera appearing together. Other stops between them let you read the relief from less familiar angles.
If you enjoy walking, the official PR03SMI Vista do Rei – Sete Cidades and PR04SMI Mata do Canário – Sete Cidades trails give you a different understanding of the area. The first is about 6 km and two hours, rated easy; the second is around 11 km and three hours, with sections where the ground can become slippery.

Weather is part of the visit
Sete Cidades is one of the places where following a timetable to the minute can be particularly frustrating. Clouds can cover the high viewpoints while leaving the village and lakes partly visible. Local guides and traveller experience point to the same practical conclusion: a clear weather window matters more than an itinerary time that cannot move.
If the summit is covered, head down to the village, walk beside the water or leave the viewpoints for later. Conversely, a short break in the cloud can be enough to transform the major viewpoints.

How much time should you allow?
A quick visit to two or three main viewpoints can fit into two hours. To combine Vista do Rei, Boca do Inferno, the village and a walk, allow half a day. With a complete trail, a slower full day is much more enjoyable.
The classic mistake is trying to squeeze everything into the same slot: viewpoints, hiking, village, lake, Mosteiros and sunset. São Miguel looks small on a map, but roads and photo stops quickly consume a day.

Official trail guidance recommends suitable footwear, rain protection, a hat, sun protection and water. Nothing extreme is required: on São Miguel, a path that is dry in the morning can be wet a few hours later.
Sete Cidades is also an important protected biodiversity area. Birdwatching can add a quieter dimension to the visit, with species such as the water rail and various migratory or occasional visitors. You are not only looking at two lakes; there is a whole caldera ecosystem around them.

Why do the lakes sometimes look less blue or green?
Light, clouds, vegetation and depth strongly influence the colours you perceive. A grey day will not produce the same contrast as bright weather.
What should you do if the viewpoints are in the clouds?
Do not force the plan. Going down to the village or keeping the viewpoints for later is usually more worthwhile than waiting at the top with no visibility.
